Apple Mac Studio (M5 Max)
Apple Mac Studio (M5 Max): compare this configuration by processor, memory, storage, connections and UK price. Check the exact build and upgrade options before buying.
Updated
The short answer
This Mac Studio puts an 18-core Apple M5 Max and 36 GB of unified memory into a 3.7-litre case, and it is a strong macOS desk machine for everyday work and coding. A 10GbE port, Wi-Fi 7 and support for 5 displays round it out, and the power supply is built into the case. Look elsewhere for local AI or a homelab: the memory is soldered at 36 GB and there is no internal drive slot.
Choose a configuration

Who this suits
It suits developers, writers and office workers who already live in macOS and want a compact box with room for several monitors and fast wired networking. The 18 cores and 460 GB/s of memory bandwidth leave good margin for compilers, browser tabs and big documents running side by side.
Skip it if you want a machine you can open up and extend later, or a box that hosts virtual machines and storage around the clock. Skip it too if local language models are the point, because 36 GB cannot grow after purchase and this build is a poor fit for that work.
Workload fit
Everyday work: well suited. The 18-core M5 Max, 36 GB of memory and a 512 GB NVMe drive cover browsing, office work and video calls with room to spare.
Coding: well suited. Many cores and 460 GB/s of memory bandwidth help with builds, containers and several editors open at once on macOS.
Homelab: a poor fit. There is one network port, no M.2 slot, no SATA bay and no PCIe slot, and the memory is soldered, so there is nowhere to add the drives, ports or memory a server box tends to collect.
Local AI: a poor fit. Memory capacity decides which models fit, and the operating system keeps about 8 GB of the 36 GB for itself, leaving the rest for a model and its runtime. The 460 GB/s bandwidth helps generation speed, but capacity is the limit here, and it cannot be raised after purchase.
Workstation: workable. The 18 cores and 36 GB can take on heavier creative and engineering jobs, but another build of the same chassis meets the workstation bar and this one does not.
| Configuration | Everyday | Coding | Home lab | Local AI | Workstation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 Max 32-core GPU, 36 GB / 512 GB | Good | Good | Not suited | Not suited | Workable |
Which configuration to choose
This retail build pairs the M5 Max and its 32-core GPU with 36 GB of unified memory and 512 GB of NVMe storage, sold new with macOS. Because the memory is soldered and there is no M.2 slot, the build you buy is the build you keep, so choose capacity up front. This one suits everyday work and coding. If workstation jobs are the goal, another build of the same chassis meets that bar, and Apple's memory ceiling for the Mac Studio is 128 GB.
Upgrading it
There are no memory slots and the 36 GB is soldered, so Apple's ceiling of 128 GB is only available by choosing a larger build at the time of purchase. Storage is the same story: the 512 GB NVMe drive is all there is, with no M.2 slot and no SATA bay. Extra space has to live outside the case, on an SD card, a drive on the USB or Thunderbolt ports, or a network share over the 10GbE port.
Connecting it
Apple supports up to 5 displays. One screen can use the HDMI 2.1 output, and the others connect over the USB-C ports, which support DisplayPort alt mode, since there is no full-size DisplayPort output. For 4K above 60 Hz over HDMI you also need an HDMI 2.1 cable and an HDMI 2.1 input on the screen.
Alongside sit six USB-C ports, four Thunderbolt ports, two USB-A ports and an SD card reader. Networking is one 10GbE port plus Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. For external expansion there are the four Thunderbolt ports; there is no USB4 port and no OCuLink.

Limitations
The 36 GB of memory is soldered and cannot be expanded, and there is no M.2 slot, SATA bay or PCIe slot for later additions. There is a single network port and no VESA mount, so it sits on the desk rather than behind a monitor. Apple does not state the thread count, the amount or type of graphics memory, the memory speed, ECC support or the TDP.
Alternatives
The HP Z2 Mini G1a swaps the Apple M5 Max for an AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO 385 and steps down from 10GbE to 2.5GbE networking, so it is the one to weigh if you want an AMD platform and can live with the slower port. The ASUS ROG NUC 15 uses an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX with discrete graphics instead of integrated, which makes it worth a look if a dedicated graphics chip matters more to you than macOS.

Common questions
Can I add more memory to the Mac Studio (M5 Max) later?
No. There are no memory slots and the 36 GB is soldered to the board. Apple's maximum for the Mac Studio is 128 GB, but you only get more by choosing a larger build at purchase, so decide how much you need before you order.
How many monitors can it drive?
Up to 5, according to Apple. One screen connects to the HDMI 2.1 output and the others go through the USB-C ports, which support DisplayPort alt mode, because there is no full-size DisplayPort output on the machine.
Can I put a second SSD inside?
No. There are no M.2 slots and no SATA bays, so the 512 GB NVMe drive is the only internal storage. For more space, use the SD card reader, a drive on the Thunderbolt or USB ports, or network storage over 10GbE.
Is it good for running local AI models?
This build is a poor fit. Memory capacity decides which models fit, the operating system keeps about 8 GB of the 36 GB for itself, and the soldered memory cannot grow later, so the room left for a model is fixed at purchase.
