MINISFORUM UM890 Pro
The short answer
Four network ports, two of them 10GbE SFP+, and a card slot wired with 8 lanes make the MINISFORUM MS-01 the machine for a homelab rack or a workstation build. The MINISFORUM UM890 Pro is the compact choice if you want integrated graphics that handle light gaming, an OCuLink port for an external graphics card and a 64 GB option for local language models. Both suit everyday work and coding in their built configurations. The decision is networking and card expansion on one side, graphics and memory capacity on the other.
Specifications side by side
CPU, GPU, installed memory and storage describe the configurations shown above. Memory limits, slots and ports describe the chassis; other configurations can differ.

| USB4 ports | 2 | 2 |
| Thunderbolt ports | 0 | 0 |
Workload by workload
For everyday use and coding, both are well suited in every configuration that ships with memory and storage. The MS-01's Core i9 models bring 14 cores and 20 threads, while the UM890 Pro's Ryzen 9 8945HS has 8 cores and 16 threads.
For gaming the UM890 Pro is workable: its Radeon 780M suits esports and older titles at 1080p, and its OCuLink port, a PCIe 4.0 x4 link, can drive an external GPU enclosure. The MS-01 is a poor fit as sold, with Intel Iris Xe graphics and no gaming GPU, though its x16-sized slot can take a discrete card.
In a homelab the MS-01 is well suited, with two 10GbE SFP+ ports beside two 2.5GbE ports, three M.2 slots and memory to 96 GB. The UM890 Pro is workable there, with two 2.5GbE ports, two M.2 slots and no 10GbE.
For local AI, check the exact model release, quantisation, context length, runtime overhead and memory available after the operating system. System RAM and GPU VRAM are different limits; shared-memory allocation depends on firmware, drivers and the backend. CPU inference or partial offloading can change what loads and its speed. Installed capacity alone does not establish compatibility or useful generation speed. Check the current Ollama or LM Studio hardware documentation for the exact GPU and operating system. Generation speed is not measured for either, and MINISFORUM does not state memory bandwidth, which governs it.
As a workstation the MS-01 is well suited because of its card slot with 8 lanes. The UM890 Pro is a poor fit, with no x8 or x16 card slot and no discrete graphics. The barebones kits of both cannot be judged until you build them.
Expansion and upgrades
Both machines take memory in two SO-DIMM slots, none of it soldered, up to 96 GB. That leaves 64 GB of headroom on the 32 GB models and 32 GB on the 64 GB UM890 Pro.
The MS-01 has three M.2 slots for 2280 and 22110 drives, plus U.2 support. Its first slot runs at PCIe 4.0 and its second at PCIe 3.0, where a PCIe 4.0 drive drops to PCIe 3.0 speed, so your fastest drive belongs in the first. The UM890 Pro has two M.2 slots for 2280 drives, and MINISFORUM does not state their PCIe generation. On the built models the 1000 GB NVMe drive occupies one slot, leaving the rest for added M.2 drives. The MS-01's x16-sized slot with 8 lanes also takes a card, while the UM890 Pro relies on OCuLink.
Ports and connectivity
The MS-01 has four network ports: two 10GbE SFP+ and two 2.5GbE. It adds Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, two USB4 ports and five USB-A ports. MINISFORUM states up to 3 displays, but the only dedicated video output is one HDMI port, and MINISFORUM does not state its version or whether the USB-C ports carry video.
The UM890 Pro has two 2.5GbE network ports, two USB4 ports, four USB-A ports and an OCuLink port. For screens it offers one HDMI and one DisplayPort output, so two monitors connect directly. MINISFORUM does not state its maximum number of displays, the video versions or whether the USB-C ports carry video. MINISFORUM also does not state its Wi-Fi standard or Bluetooth version, so check before relying on wireless.
Which configurations to compare
The fair match is the 32 GB MS-01 with the Core i9-13900H against the 32 GB UM890 Pro with the Ryzen 9 8945HS. Both carry 1000 GB of NVMe storage and Windows 11 Pro, so the difference is the platform. The MS-01 models with the Core i9-12900H and Core i5-12600H also carry 32 GB, and the i5 has 12 cores and 16 threads. No built MS-01 matches the 64 GB UM890 Pro on memory, which matters for local models. For a self-build, set the MS-01 barebones kit with the Core i9-13900H against the UM890 Pro barebones kit, and fit the same memory and drives to both.
If neither fits
Maybe you need neither the MS-01's ten-gigabit networking nor the UM890 Pro's OCuLink port and 64 GB option. In that case, the alternative is the Beelink EQR6. It uses an AMD Ryzen 5 6600H in place of the Intel Core i9-13900H. Beelink does not state its maximum memory, so check that before you plan any memory upgrade.

Common questions
Can the MS-01 take a graphics card?
Its x16-sized slot, wired with 8 lanes, can take a discrete card. As sold, its Intel Iris Xe graphics make it a poor fit for gaming. The UM890 Pro has no card slot, but its OCuLink port can drive an external GPU enclosure.
Which one suits local AI models?
For local AI, check the exact model release, quantisation, context length, runtime overhead and memory available after the operating system. System RAM and GPU VRAM are different limits; shared-memory allocation depends on firmware, drivers and the backend. CPU inference or partial offloading can change what loads and its speed. Installed capacity alone does not establish compatibility or useful generation speed. Check the current Ollama or LM Studio hardware documentation for the exact GPU and operating system. Both take up to 96 GB in two SO-DIMM slots.
Do both machines have Wi-Fi?
The MS-01 comes with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. For the UM890 Pro, MINISFORUM does not state the Wi-Fi standard, the Bluetooth version or whether a wireless module is included. Confirm that with the seller before you rely on wireless with it.
How many monitors can each one drive?
MINISFORUM states up to 3 displays for the MS-01, which has one HDMI output and no DisplayPort. The UM890 Pro has one HDMI and one DisplayPort output, so two screens connect directly. MINISFORUM does not state its maximum number of displays.
