MINISFORUM MS-01 vs MINISFORUM MS-A2
Two mini PCs side by side: what each one suits, where they differ, and the price of each on amazon.com.

MINISFORUM MS-A2
The short answer
Same chassis, different processors: the MS-01 and MS-A2 share a 196 x 189 x 48 mm workstation body and the same pair of 10GbE SFP+ ports, so the choice comes down to the processor, the memory and the USB. The MS-A2 suits you if you want 16 cores and 32 threads, or a factory build with 64 GB or 96 GB for larger local language models. The MS-01 suits you if you need two USB4 ports and five USB-A ports, or want a choice of Intel processors from the Core i5-12600H to the Core i9-13900H.

Workload by workload
Everyday work and coding are well suited on every assembled configuration of both machines. The assembled MS-01 versions pair 32 GB of DDR5 with either 14 cores and 20 threads on the Core i9 chips or 12 cores and 16 threads on the Core i5-12600H. Its barebones kits arrive without memory or storage, so they are not assessed until built. The MS-A2's Ryzen 9 9955HX has 16 cores and 32 threads, and its assembled versions come with 32 GB, 64 GB or 96 GB of DDR5.
Gaming is a poor fit for both as sold: the MS-01 relies on Intel Iris Xe Graphics and the MS-A2 on the AMD Radeon 610M, a minimal display adapter. Each has an x16-size slot with 8 lanes that can take a discrete card, but neither ships with one.
Local AI is where they part ways. For local AI, check the exact model release, quantization, context length, runtime overhead and memory available after the operating system. System RAM and GPU VRAM are different limits; shared-memory allocation depends on firmware, drivers and the backend. CPU inference or partial offloading can change what loads and its speed. Installed capacity alone does not establish compatibility or useful generation speed. Check the current Ollama or LM Studio hardware documentation for the exact GPU and operating system. Capacity decides which models fit, while generation speed depends on memory bandwidth, which MINISFORUM does not state for either machine.
Homelab and workstation use are well suited on both, thanks to four network ports, three storage slots and memory up to 96 GB.
Expansion and upgrades
Memory works the same way in both: 2 SODIMM slots, nothing soldered, and a maximum of 96 GB. Every assembled MS-01 has 32 GB, so there is room to grow toward 96 GB. The MS-A2 lets you buy that ceiling from the factory: the 96 GB model is already full, while the 32 GB and 64 GB models leave room.
Storage is shared too: 3 M.2 slots taking 2280 or 22110 drives plus U.2, with the first slot at PCIe 4.0 and the second at PCIe 3.0, where a faster drive runs at PCIe 3.0 speed. On the MS-01 an added drive is an NVMe drive, while on the MS-A2 it is an M.2 drive or a U.2 drive. The MS-A2 ships with 1000 GB or 2000 GB of NVMe storage, the MS-01 with 1000 GB, and neither has a SATA bay.
Ports and connectivity
Networking is identical: 4 ports, two 10GbE SFP+ and two 2.5GbE. Wireless differs slightly, with Wi-Fi 6 on the MS-01 and Wi-Fi 6E on the MS-A2, both with Bluetooth 5.2. USB is where the MS-01 pulls ahead: it has 2 USB4 ports and 5 USB-A ports, while the MS-A2 has 2 USB-C ports without USB4 and 3 USB-A ports.
Each has 1 HDMI output and no DisplayPort output. MINISFORUM gives the MS-01 a maximum of 3 displays but does not say whether its USB-C ports carry video, and states neither point for the MS-A2. Also unstated on both: the HDMI version, memory speed, ECC support, M.2 SATA support, TDP and VESA mounting, plus OCuLink and an SD reader on the MS-A2; the MS-01 has neither of those two.
Which configurations to compare
For a like-for-like comparison, set the 32 GB MS-01 with the Core i9-13900H and 1000 GB of NVMe against the 32 GB MS-A2 with 1000 GB: same memory, same storage, same Windows 11 Pro, so the processor is the only variable. If you build your own, compare the barebones MS-01 with the Core i9-13900H against the barebones MS-A2, both sold without memory or storage. The 64 GB and 96 GB MS-A2 builds have no assembled MS-01 counterpart.
If neither fits
If you do not need the 10GbE SFP+ ports, both machines carry networking you will not use. The alternative to weigh is the MINISFORUM UM890 Pro, which uses an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS and offers 2.5GbE networking instead of the pair of 10GbE SFP+ ports alongside 2.5GbE. It suits a buyer who wants an AMD processor without the workstation's networking.

Common questions
Can either machine take a graphics card?
Both have a slot of x16 physical size wired with 8 lanes that can take a discrete card. Neither ships with one, so gaming is a poor fit as sold, with only Intel Iris Xe Graphics or the AMD Radeon 610M on board.
Which one can run a 70B language model?
For local AI, check the exact model release, quantization, context length, runtime overhead and memory available after the operating system. System RAM and GPU VRAM are different limits; shared-memory allocation depends on firmware, drivers and the backend. CPU inference or partial offloading can change what loads and its speed. Installed capacity alone does not establish compatibility or useful generation speed. Check the current Ollama or LM Studio hardware documentation for the exact GPU and operating system.
How many monitors can I connect?
MINISFORUM gives the MS-01 a maximum of 3 displays and states no maximum for the MS-A2. Each has 1 HDMI output and no DisplayPort output, and video over USB-C is not confirmed on either, so plan around HDMI.
Is the memory upgradeable on both?
Yes. Each has 2 SODIMM slots, no soldered memory and a maximum of 96 GB. The 32 GB models have room to grow, while the MS-A2 with 96 GB is already at its ceiling.
