Mini PCs for Coding, Containers and Local Builds

Cores, memory and displays for development work.

What to look for

Development work is bound by memory and core count more than clock speed. 16 GB handles an editor, a browser and a couple of containers; 32 GB is the comfortable floor once you run virtual machines or several services at once. Cores matter for builds and test suites. Check whether memory is soldered, because that decides whether you can add more in a year. Display outputs and USB4 or Thunderbolt matter for a desk setup with external drives and monitors. Where a model has two memory slots and the memory is not soldered, the finder treats it as upgradeable; where the manufacturer does not publish the slot count, it does not.

How to choose

  1. Step 1

Set memory from what you run, not from the price

An editor, a browser and a couple of containers are comfortable on 16 GB. Virtual machines, a database and a few services at once want 32 GB. This is the specification most likely to limit the machine, and the one most likely to be undersized at purchase.

  2. Step 2

Check cores if you build or run test suites

Compilation and test runs scale with cores. Eight cores and sixteen threads is a strong working point; the N-series parts at the bottom of the market have four cores and will feel slow under a full build.

  3. Step 3

Decide the operating system early, because it constrains hardware

macOS runs only on Apple machines, and Apple machines do not run Windows natively. Linux runs on everything here. If macOS is a requirement, the catalogue narrows to Mac mini immediately, and memory on those is soldered at purchase.

  4. Step 4

Look at Thunderbolt or USB4 for the desk

40 Gbps handles external drives and drives displays over a single cable. We mark a model as having it only where the manufacturer confirms the port, so an unconfirmed field means we could not verify it, not that the port is absent.

What the numbers mean

Installed memory

Containers and virtual machines

16 GB for Docker, 32 GB once VMs are involved

Cores and threads

Build and test times

8 cores and 16 threads is a strong working point

Memory slots

Whether you can add more

Two SODIMM slots and not soldered

Operating system

What you can run at all

macOS only on Apple; Linux everywhere; Windows on everything except Apple

Thunderbolt or USB4

External storage and displays

Confirmed port on the model page

Common mistakes

  • Buying 16 GB soldered, then needing virtual machines six months later.
  • Choosing an Apple machine for a Windows toolchain, or the reverse.
  • Assuming every USB-C port is USB4. Connector shape and protocol are different things, which is why we only mark confirmed ports.

Questions worth asking

How much memory for containers?

16 GB runs Docker comfortably for most work. Virtual machines want 32 GB or more, and the finder applies that threshold when you say you run VMs.

Does the operating system limit my choice?

Yes, in one direction: macOS runs only on Apple machines, and Apple machines do not run Windows natively. Linux runs on everything here.

What does USB4 or Thunderbolt get me?

40 Gbps for external drives and the ability to drive displays over one cable. We only mark a model as having it where the manufacturer confirms the port.
