WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB with Heatsink

Part numberWDS400T2XHE

The short answer

With its heatsink already fitted, the WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on PCIe 4.0 with 4 TB of capacity. It is for a mini PC owner with a free slot of that size who wants a lot of storage in one drive and has room for the cooler.

Specifications

This is a 4 TB drive, enough to hold a large library in a single slot. It reads sequentially at 7300 MB/s and writes at 6600 MB/s over NVMe on PCIe 4.0. Endurance is 2400 TBW.

The heatsink is already fitted, so the drive arrives with its own cooling, and it is the reason for the clearance check. The part number is WDS400T2XHE.

Which mini PCs it fits

It is an M.2 2280 NVMe drive, so it needs an M.2 2280 slot with NVMe over PCIe 4.0.

The GMKtec NucBox K10, HP Z2 Mini G1a and Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Gen 5 can take it, but check clearance because the drive has a heatsink. The Apple Mac mini (M6), Mac Studio (M5 Max) and Mac Studio (M5 Ultra) have no M.2 slot, so it does not fit.

For the ACEMAGIC AM08 Pro and GMKtec NucBox M5 Plus, we have not confirmed the M.2 slot count, so fit is not confirmed.

Before you buy

Before you buy, check heatsink clearance in your machine. You also need a real M.2 2280 slot, which the Apple Mac mini (M6) does not have. WD does not state whether the drive has a DRAM cache or is single-sided.

Common questions

Will it fit my mini PC?

It needs an M.2 2280 NVMe slot, and the heatsink means you should check clearance first, as for the GMKtec NucBox K10. Apple's Mac mini (M6) has no M.2 slot.

Does it come with a heatsink?

Yes, the heatsink is fitted, so you do not add one yourself. That is also why you should check clearance in your machine before you buy.

How fast is it?

WD states a sequential read of 7300 MB/s and a write of 6600 MB/s on PCIe 4.0 with 4 TB of capacity.
