The short answer

Thunderbolt 5 input, DisplayPort 2.1 and a 39.7" IPS Black panel at 5120x2160 define the LG UltraFine evo 40U990A. It is for a mini PC owner who wants one very large, sharp desk display running at 120 Hz, from a machine with a video output that can drive it.

Specifications

At 39.7" and 5120x2160, the panel gives you a lot of desk space in a single screen. It is IPS Black at 120 Hz, with HDR600 and DisplayHDR 600 certification. The Thunderbolt 5 input suits a machine with a matching port, and the monitor also has a daisy chain output. Built-in speakers and a VESA mount mean it can go on an arm without extra speakers.

Which mini PCs it fits

A monitor needs a matching video output, and this one takes Thunderbolt 5, DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI or USB-C video. The HP Z2 Mini G1i, Lenovo ThinkCentre neo 50q Gen 5, MINISFORUM MS-02 Ultra and ACEMAGIC AM06 Pro fit. The Lenovo ThinkCentre M90q Gen 5, MINISFORUM AI X1 Pro and ACEMAGIC V1 fit with a caveat: 120 Hz at this resolution is not confirmed for their outputs. For the MSI MAX Edge AI+ and NIMO Mini PC Desktop AI Max+ 395, we have not confirmed the fit, because we lack details of their HDMI outputs.

Before you buy

Check that your machine's output can carry 120 Hz at 5120x2160 before buying, since several machines above are not confirmed for it. LG does not state the HDMI version, USB-C power delivery or whether there is a built-in KVM switch, so do not count on any of them.

Common questions

Can I run it at 120 Hz from a mini PC?

Only if the machine's output supports 120 Hz at 5120x2160. The Lenovo ThinkCentre M90q Gen 5, MINISFORUM AI X1 Pro and ACEMAGIC V1 are not confirmed for that.

Does it power my mini PC over USB-C?

LG does not state USB-C power delivery for this monitor, so we cannot say it will power a mini PC over the cable. Plan on the machine's own power supply.

Which inputs does it have?

It has a Thunderbolt 5 input, two HDMI inputs, a DisplayPort 2.1 input and a USB-C upstream port, plus a daisy chain output for another display.
