Crucial T500 1TB with Heatsink

Part numberCT1000T500SSD5

The short answer

With a heatsink already fitted, the Crucial T500 1TB (part number CT1000T500SSD5) is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on PCIe 4.0 with 1 TB of capacity. It suits a mini PC owner who wants a storage upgrade for a standard 2280 slot and can spare the extra height the heatsink adds.

Specifications

This is a 1 TB drive. Its sequential read is 7300 MB/s over PCIe 4.0, so a slower slot will hold it back. It uses the standard M.2 2280 size and already has a heatsink, so you need no separate one, though the added height is what to measure for.

Which mini PCs it fits

An M.2 2280 NVMe drive goes in an M.2 2280 slot; this one is PCIe 4.0. Clearance decides the rest, since the heatsink adds height. With a clearance check, it fits the MINISFORUM AtomMan G1 Pro and MSI MAX Edge AI+. The ACEMAGIC AM06 Pro also takes it, but runs it at PCIe 3.0 speed. The Apple Mac Studio (M5 Max), Mac Studio (M5 Ultra) and Mac mini (M5 Pro) have no M.2 slot, so it does not fit. Fit is not confirmed for the ACEMAGIC AM08 Pro or GMKtec NucBox M5 Plus, where the number of M.2 slots is not confirmed.

Before you buy

Check clearance in any machine before you buy, because the heatsink is part of the drive, and remember the ACEMAGIC AM06 Pro slot limits it to PCIe 3.0 speed. Crucial does not state the sequential write speed, the endurance, whether there is a DRAM cache, or whether the drive is single-sided.

Common questions

Will the T500 fit a Mac mini or Mac Studio?

No for the Apple Mac mini (M5 Pro), Mac Studio (M5 Max) and Mac Studio (M5 Ultra): they have no M.2 slot, so an M.2 2280 drive has nowhere to go.

Does this T500 come with a heatsink?

Yes, the heatsink is fitted to the drive. That adds height, so check clearance in your machine before buying, as the MINISFORUM AtomMan G1 Pro and MSI MAX Edge AI+ both call for.

Will it run at full speed in the ACEMAGIC AM06 Pro?

Not there: in the ACEMAGIC AM06 Pro the slot runs the drive at PCIe 3.0 speed, below the PCIe 4.0 the drive supports. Clearance for the heatsink also needs checking.
