Samsung 9100 PRO 1TB

Part numberMZ-VAP1T0BW

The same part under other regional numbers: MZ-VAP1T0B/AM

The short answer

Samsung's 9100 PRO 1TB, part number MZ-VAP1T0BW, is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD on PCIe 5.0 with 1 TB of capacity. It is for a mini PC owner with a free M.2 2280 slot who wants a fast drive, and it reaches its full speed only where the slot runs at PCIe 5.0.

Specifications

It has 1 TB of capacity. Sequential read is 14700 MB/s and sequential write is 13300 MB/s, speeds that a slot limited to PCIe 4.0 holds back. Endurance is 600 TBW. The drive has a DRAM cache and is single-sided, so it carries its chips on one face of the board.

Which mini PCs it fits

An M.2 2280 NVMe drive goes in an M.2 2280 slot, and this one speaks PCIe 5.0. It fits the ASUS ROG NUC, Beelink GTi14 Ultra, GEEKOM A8 Max and GMKtec NucBox G3. It fits the GMKtec NucBox K13, HP Z2 Mini G1a and Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Gen 5, but their slot runs it at PCIe 4.0 speed. The Apple Mac mini (M5 Pro), Mac mini (M6) and Mac Studio (M5 Max) have no M.2 slot. For the ACEMAGIC AM08 Pro and GMKtec NucBox M5 Plus we have not confirmed it fits.

Before you buy

No heatsink is fitted, so check whether your machine's slot has its own cooling or room to add one. A PCIe 5.0 drive only shows its full speed in a PCIe 5.0 slot, and several machines run it at PCIe 4.0 speed instead. Before buying, confirm your machine has an M.2 2280 slot at all.

Common questions

Will the Samsung 9100 PRO 1TB work in my mini PC?

It needs an M.2 2280 slot for an NVMe drive. It fits the GEEKOM A8 Max, but the Apple Mac mini (M6) has no M.2 slot, so it does not fit there.

Will it reach PCIe 5.0 speed in my mini PC?

Not always. In the GMKtec NucBox K13, HP Z2 Mini G1a and Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Gen 5 it runs at PCIe 4.0 speed, while the drive's own interface is PCIe 5.0.

Does it come with a heatsink?

No, no heatsink is fitted. It is a single-sided M.2 2280 drive with a DRAM cache, so cooling is something you sort out with your machine.
