TP-Link TL-SG105-M2

Part numberTL-SG105-M2

The short answer

With 5 ports at 2.5GbE and no fan, the TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 (part number TL-SG105-M2) is a network switch for a mini PC owner who wants several wired connections at that speed from one box. It is unmanaged and has no PoE budget, 10GbE port or SFP+ port.

Specifications

The 5 ports are all 2.5GbE, so each wired device you plug in can link at that speed if its own port allows it. There are 0 10GbE ports and 0 SFP+ ports, so there is no faster uplink. The switch is unmanaged. It is fanless, so it adds no fan noise to your desk. The PoE budget is 0 W, so it will not power cameras or access points.

Which mini PCs it fits

A switch does not care about a machine's memory or storage. What decides the fit is the LAN port on the mini PC. All 5 ports run at 2.5GbE, so a machine with a 2.5GbE LAN port is the match for them.

We have not confirmed the fit for either machine we can name. For the ASUS NUC 14 Performance, its LAN speed is not confirmed. The same goes for the Apple Mac Studio (M5 Max). Check the LAN speed of your machine on its maker's page before you count on 2.5GbE.

Checked against every mini PC sold on amazon.co.uk, from the specifications we hold for each machine.

Before you buy

This is a plain switch. It has no 10GbE or SFP+ port for a faster uplink, and it cannot power PoE devices. We have not confirmed it for the two machines named above, because their LAN speed is not confirmed. TP-Link's own specification page is the place to check anything else.

Common questions

Does it have a 10GbE or SFP+ port?

No. It has 5 ports at 2.5GbE, with 0 10GbE ports and 0 SFP+ ports, so every connection tops out at 2.5GbE.

Is it managed, and does it have a fan?

The TL-SG105-M2 is not managed, and it is fanless. That makes it a quiet plug-in switch for a desk or shelf next to a mini PC.

Can it power devices over PoE?

No. Its PoE budget is 0 W, so cameras, access points and other PoE devices need their own power supply or a separate PoE source.
